Biography

Rimer Cardillo was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1944. He studied in Montevideo and in old East Germany. He has been a teacher most of his life and a professor in New Palz, upstate New York, for some 25 years. His work and artistry has been constantly recognised and rewarded through his many fellowships from many prestigious foundations such as Gottlieb, Krasner-Pollock and Guggenheim. Cardillo is an artist with expertise in printmaking techniques and graphic processes. He has created prints from a complex combination of etching, aquatint, mezzotint, engraving and embossing. All together, he has a body of work made up of different series created in the last fifty years, which share one essential concern: our relationship with nature and the responsibilities that emerge from this relationship.

If nature and its beings, in their diversity and complexity of forms, offer us unparalleled beauty that art can barely and coarsely imitate, and whose fragility science warns us about in its ethical evolution, Cardillo seems to tell us through his works that that beauty, in its magnificence, in all its complexity and subtle of forms, is pure vital contingency, and that its rescue conceals its inevitable destruction.
